Culture Revolution: The Spirit, Skills and Significance of Excellence
Culture is
constantly changing, especially because we live in a pluralistic society where
different beliefs, values and practices coexist. As Christians, however, we
must contend for the faith that was once delivered to us and remain committed
to the values of God's Kingdom.
There is a
culture we call Kingdom culture or Christ culture, where Jesus Christ is at the
center of everything. This is what we are talking about when we speak of a
cultural revolution.
Today, we explore the subject of excellence and how Christians can become agents
of positive cultural change in their communities, workplaces and the nation.
Excellence
means doing things not merely above average but with distinction. It means
being intentional, standing out for the right reasons and paying attention to
details.
Some people
say that the devil is in the details, but as Christians, we know that Jesus is
also in the details. God cares about every aspect of our lives. Nothing is too
small for His attention.
Unfortunately,
many people settle for what is merely good enough. They embrace mediocrity
instead of pursuing excellence. However, this is not the culture God desires
for His people.
Our God is a
God of excellence, and He is concerned about the details.
Using Daniel
as our example, we will explore three important aspects of excellence:
- The Spirit of Excellence
- The Skills for Excellence
- The Significance of Excellence
Our key
scripture is Daniel 6:3:
"Then
this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an
excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the
whole realm." (NKJV)
Daniel
distinguished himself because an excellent spirit was in him. His excellence
set him apart from everyone else.
1. The Spirit of Excellence
The spirit
of excellence is first and foremost a spiritual discipline. It is not about
outward appearances or putting on a show. It is deeply spiritual because it is
founded on eternal values, divine principles and non-negotiable convictions.
Excellence Is About Absolutes
When we talk
about excellence, we are talking about absolutes: principles and values that we
cannot afford to compromise.
These are
the things that matter eternally and must remain non-negotiable in our lives.
A good
example is the three Hebrew boys: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. They refused
to compromise their faith, even when faced with serious consequences.
Daniel also
demonstrated this conviction when he was thrown into the lions' den. He
remained committed to his faith and refused to compromise his relationship with
God.
The early
disciples, apart from Judas, stood firm in their faith despite the persecution
they faced. Many paid the ultimate price because they would not compromise the
truth.
If we are to
bring about a cultural revolution in our nation, we must establish godly values
and have principles that we are not willing to compromise.
Daniel 6:3 tells us that an excellent spirit was in him. It takes the Spirit of God
working in us to develop the conviction to stand for what is right and do things
the right way.
Excellence Is a Matter of the Heart
Daniel 1:8 says: "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank...(NKJV)
Notice that
Daniel purposed in his heart. His decision was not accidental. He had already
settled in his heart that he would not compromise his convictions.
Excellence
begins in the heart. It is not simply about what people see on the outside but
about the condition of our inner lives.
In Matthew
15:18, Jesus teaches that the things that come out of the mouth proceed from
the heart and reveal what is within a person.
The mouth
becomes an outlet through which the contents of the heart are expressed.
This is why Proverbs 4:23 says: "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." (NKJV)
The
condition of our hearts influences our attitudes, decisions, behaviour and the
way we relate to the world around us.
When Christ
lives in us, His character should be reflected in the way we live. Our
surroundings, conduct and attitudes should potray the values we profess to
believe.
Excellence
is therefore not simply about having resources or living in favourable
circumstances. It is also about what we choose to do with what we have.
Excellence Is Based on Character, Not Career
Excellence
is fundamentally a character issue.
Without
character, a person can become an excellent professional but use their
abilities for the wrong purposes.
You can
become a highly skilled lawyer without being a person of integrity. You can
become a charismatic preacher without having the character of a godly pastor.
You can become a powerful politician but fail to become a responsible
statesman.
Similarly, a
person can occupy an influential position in the corporate world while lacking
honesty and integrity.
The
difference is character.
Psalm 78:72, speaking about David, says: "So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands." (NKJV)
Notice the
two qualities mentioned: integrity of heart and skilfulness of hands.
David had
both character and ability. True excellence requires these two qualities to
work together.
Integrity Builds a Reputation of Excellence
Integrity is one of the foundations of excellence.
When an
opportunity arose to recruit young people into the Uganda Revenue Authority
(URA), several people from the church were recommended because of their
integrity and good character.
The church
had developed a reputation for trustworthiness.
Later,
allegations were made against the church concerning children who had been taken
abroad. Investigations followed, and the church was able to provide records,
passports and other documentation to account for every child.
Because the
church valued excellence and proper record-keeping, it could demonstrate that
everything was in order.
This
illustrates an important principle: Excellence requires integrity,
accountability and proper stewardship.
1 Kings
9:4–5 emphasises the importance of walking before God with integrity of heart
and righteousness.
God's desire
is that we live according to His commands and remain faithful to His
principles.
Do you want
to be established? Do you want to do things excellently? Develop a heart of
integrity.
Excellence Is an Act of Worship
Colossians 3:17 says: "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." (NKJV)
As
Christians, the reason we do what we do should ultimately be to glorify God.
Excellence
is not about impressing people, seeking recognition or receiving applause. It
is about honouring Jesus Christ.
Whether
people are watching or not, whether your supervisor is present or absent,
whether you receive recognition or not, your standard of excellence should
remain the same.
Why? Because
you are doing it for Jesus.
Excellence
is motivated by our love for Christ, not by the fear of people.
It is not a
performance intended to impress human beings. It is an expression of worship to
the King of Glory.
Furthermore,
excellence is not a competition in which we seek to outdo one another. We are
members of one team, and we should complement one another.
Where one
person is weak, another can provide strength so that together we achieve the
best results.
The purpose
is not to exalt ourselves but to exalt Jesus and make Him famous.
2. The Skills for Excellence
Having the
right spiritual values and convictions is important, but excellence also
requires practical skills.
We can pray
and trust God for miracles, but there comes a time when we must put attention on the
responsibility He has placed in our hands.
Sometimes,
the miracle is in our hands. What are we going to do with them?
We must
learn to be practical, disciplined and intentional.
For example,
we cannot spend all our time praying for financial breakthrough while refusing
to learn how to save, manage money or develop useful skills.
There are
skills we must acquire if we are to fulfil God's purposes for our lives.
Excellence Requires Skill and Preparation
Excellence
attracts attention because it produces results that are distinctive.
When
something is done skilfully, diligently and with dedication, it stands out.
David is an
excellent example. He was skilled at playing the harp, and his ability brought
him to the attention of King Saul.
He did not
approach his responsibilities carelessly or settle for mediocrity. He developed
his abilities and performed his duties with excellence.
The same
principle applies to us today.
Whether you
work in the corporate world, business, ministry, education or any other
profession, the culture of excellence must extend beyond the church walls.
We should
take Kingdom values into our workplaces and communities.
We are
called to become agents of cultural change wherever God has placed us.
Excellence Requires Authenticity
Excellence
is not about copying other people. It is about developing your God-given
abilities and using them with authenticity.
When you are
skilful and knowledgeable in what you do, people begin to notice the quality of
your work.
However, our
abilities should never become an opportunity to draw attention to ourselves.
In the Christian sphere, one of the most disappointing things for mature Christians is to see a preacher
become absorbed in himself while ministering.
A preacher
can become so fascinated by the microphone, the attention and the limelight
that he forgets whom he represents.
Ministry is
not a performance. It is about representing Christ.
This is why
we must combine our skills with authenticity, humility and integrity.
Excellence Requires Continuous Learning
2 Timothy 2:15 says: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (NIV)
We must equip
ourselves to handle the responsibilities God has entrusted to us.
It is not
enough to have good intentions. We must study, prepare, learn and develop our
abilities.
We must also
be careful about teachings that distort God's Word.
Grace should
never be used as an excuse for compromising the truth or avoiding
accountability.
God's grace
is precious. It is not an invitation to live carelessly or abandon holiness.
God is holy,
and He calls His people to live holy lives.
The story of
Samson provides a serious warning about the consequences of repeatedly
compromising one's convictions.
Despite his
calling and the strength God had given him, Samson continued to compromise.
Eventually, he lost the strength that had distinguished him.
Judges 16:20
records that Samson did not realise that the Lord had departed from him.
This is a
sobering reminder that we must never take our relationship with God for
granted.
We must
guard our spiritual lives, remain faithful and refuse to compromise the values
of God's Kingdom.
Skills Set You Apart
Daniel 6:3 tells us that Daniel distinguished himself above the other officials because
an excellent spirit was in him.
Your skills
and abilities can take you to a higher level.
You need a
skill set that distinguishes you from others. Do not accept mediocrity as your
standard.
Excellence
is attractive because it demonstrates dedication, competence and authenticity.
However, our
skills should ultimately point people towards Jesus, not ourselves.
Psalm 78:72
again reminds us that David guided God's people through the integrity of his
heart and the skilfulness of his hands.
This shows
that excellence involves both spiritual character and practical ability.
Excellence
is a discipline that can be learned, a skill set that can be acquired and an
art that can be developed.
Judges 20:16
gives an example of 700 skilled left-handed men who could sling a stone at a
hair's breadth without missing.
Their
ability was not accidental. It required training, discipline and practice.
In the same
way, if we want to go places and fulfil God's purposes, we must sharpen our
abilities.
Do not
expect to achieve great things while refusing to prepare yourself.
Learn in Your Season of Preparation
The story of
David and Goliath provides another powerful illustration.
Before David
became known throughout Israel, he spent time in the wilderness looking after
his father's sheep.
During that
season, he developed the skills and courage that would later become useful in
facing Goliath.
When a lion
or a bear attacked the flock, David learned how to protect the sheep.
Nobody was
celebrating him during those quiet moments. Nobody knew what he was becoming.
Yet, those
experiences were preparing him for a greater assignment.
One day,
David went to the battlefield to deliver food to his brothers and encountered
Goliath, who had been challenging the army of Israel.
While
everyone else saw an intimidating giant, David saw an opportunity to
demonstrate the power of God.
He declared
that he was coming against Goliath in the name of the Lord.
David did
not depend on faith alone without preparation. He had developed the practical
skills needed to use his sling.
His
confidence in God was accompanied by the abilities he had cultivated in the
wilderness.
The lesson
is clear: Your season of preparation is never wasted.
You may be
in a place where nobody recognises your abilities, but God can use that season
to prepare you for future responsibilities.
Develop your
spiritual muscles. Study, learn. practice, equip yourself.
When the
opportunity comes, you will be ready.
God is
raising up envisioned, empowered, equipped and engaged young leaders who will
bring positive change to the nation.
We must
therefore prepare ourselves for the opportunities ahead.
3. The Significance of Excellence
Excellence
is a preparation for divine appointments and assignments. God uses the
different experiences and seasons of our lives to shape our character and
prepare us for the responsibilities ahead.
It is not
simply about achieving success in this life. It also has eternal Impact.
Excellence Prepares Us for God's Assignments
As
Christians, we must understand that our lives are part of God's greater
purpose.
We are being
shaped and prepared for the responsibilities He has entrusted to us.
The places
where we find ourselves today can become a university of character formation.
God uses
different experiences to prune, groom, refine and mold us into vessels that
can be used for His glory.
Therefore,
do not run away from the process.
Do not give
up when you go through difficult seasons. Allow those experiences to develop
your character and strengthen your faith.
Pride and
stubbornness can prevent us from learning. People who believe they already know
everything often miss opportunities for growth.
We must
remain humble, teachable and willing to learn.
Psalm 75:6–7
reminds us that promotion does not come from the east, west or south, but God
is the Judge who brings one down and exalts another.
Promotion
ultimately comes from God.
He knows
when we are ready and where He wants to place us.
Excellence Sets You Up for Promotion
Daniel's
life demonstrates how excellence can position a person for greater
responsibility.
Daniel went
through many difficult experiences, but God was preparing him for an
extraordinary assignment.
Daniel 2:48 says: "Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon." (NKJV)
Daniel's
excellence and faithfulness distinguished him.
Eventually,
he was elevated to a position of great influence in a foreign nation.
Daniel 6:3
also reveals that the king considered placing Daniel over the entire kingdom
because an excellent spirit was in him.
This teaches
us that excellence can open doors to greater responsibilities and
opportunities.
That
difficult boss, challenging workplace or demanding environment may be part of
the process through which God is developing your character.
Remember
that God is greater than the challenges you face.
Remain
faithful, work diligently and maintain your integrity.
Excellence Opens Doors for Divine Connections
Excellence
can also create opportunities for meaningful relationships and divine
connections.
When people identify your character, competence and dedication, they become more willing
to entrust you with greater responsibilities.
Proverbs 22:29 says: "Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men." (NKJV)
This
scripture reminds us of the value of skill and diligence.
If you
desire promotion, you must be willing to distinguish yourself through the
quality of your work.
Do not
settle for mediocrity simply because everyone else is doing the same thing.
You are not
everybody.
God created
you with unique abilities, gifts and potential. You are valuable to Him and
were worth the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
Do not live
as though you have no purpose or calling.
Appreciate the value God has placed in your life and use your abilities to serve Him.
Excellence Builds a Lasting Legacy
1 Kings
9:4–5 reminds us of God's promise concerning David's kingdom:
God
emphasized integrity of heart, uprightness and obedience.
These
principles are essential for building something that will last beyond our own
generation.
As
Christians, we must remain committed to the values that form the foundation of
our faith.
Jesus Christ
must always remain at the center of everything we do. He must never become a
footnote or a tool for gaining popularity, money or influence.
He is the
foundation and the reason for everything.
We must also
support and encourage the younger generation of leaders. Those who have gone
ahead should work together with those who are coming up so that the work of God
can continue.
The legacy
we build today should inspire and equip future generations to remain faithful
until Jesus returns.
God, who
began the good work, is faithful to complete it.
Become an Agent of Cultural Revolution
Excellence
should not remain an idea that we discuss casually.
It must become a lifestyle that influences every area of our lives.
We are
called to become agents of positive cultural change.
Wherever you work, begin there.
If you are in business, demonstrate excellence in the way you conduct your business. If you are in leadership, lead with integrity. If you are in education, pursue excellence in your responsibilities. If you are in ministry, serve faithfully and represent Christ with humility.
Do not wait
for circumstances to improve before deciding to make a difference.
Begin where
you are, with what you have.
Jesus is
looking for people who are willing to stand for truth, uphold godly values and
influence their environments positively.
One person
standing with Jesus is a majority.
Not everyone
will embrace the truth, but that should never cause us to compromise our
convictions.
We must
remain faithful to God's Word and demonstrate His character through our
actions.
Be a
catalyst for a positive cultural revolution by embracing the spirit of
excellence, acquiring excellent skills and making a significant eternal impact
wherever you are.
Excellence is more than being good at what you do. It is about becoming the kind of person whose character, convictions and abilities reflect the nature of Christ. Through the life of Daniel, we learn that excellence involves three important principles: the Spirit of Excellence, the Skills for Excellence and the Significance of Excellence. We must refuse to settle for mediocrity. We must distinguish ourselves through godly character, diligence and faithfulness. Remember, excellence is not about competing with others or seeking human recognition. It is about honoring Jesus Christ through everything we do. Let us embrace the spirit of excellence, develop the skills for excellence and live lives of eternal significance.
May we
become agents of positive cultural change in our homes, workplaces, churches,
communities and nation.
