Life Through The Book of James - Pray With Faith

Text: James 5: 13-18

As James concludes his letter to the Christians, he reminds them of a very basic principle that is foundational to our faith. 

He reminds believers that if they are going to have the power and ability to go through hard times, they have to live out their faith, tame their tongues and be true followers of Jesus. The source of that power comes through prayer.

It is during prayer that we are refreshed, revived, strengthened, encouraged, and empowered to become all that God has called us to be. Through prayer we connect with God.

Whatever we need in life, God has already provided for us, and the way we access His provision is through prayer and faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus said:
"Whatever you shall ask of My Father in My name....." (John 14: 13) That's what prayer is.

The Bible also tells us that God shall supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil 4:19). The way we tap into that provision is by going to Him in faith through prayer.
 

Prayer in Every Circumstance

James asks a series of practical questions:

"Is anyone among you in trouble?" In other words;

Are you facing hardship?

Are you experiencing pain?

Are you walking through disappointment?

James gives a simple answer:

Pray.

He then asks another question:

"Is anyone happy?" In other words;

Is life going well?

Is your family healthy?

Is your job okay?

Then your response should be:

Praise God!

Whether life is difficult or joyful, in all circumstances James teaches us that our response should always be directed toward God.

Prayer belongs in every season of life.
 

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is simply heartfelt communication with God.

Whether you are experiencing difficult times or joyful moments, prayer is pouring out your heart honestly before God.
 

Prayer for the Sick

James continues by asking: "Is anyone among you sick?"

If so, let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of Jesus.

The elders are leaders within the church who stand together in faith with those who are suffering.

The important point is this:

The oil itself has no power. It is simply a symbol.

The power comes from God through prayer offered in faith.

James declares that the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well and the Lord will raise them up.

James also reminds us that through Christ there is forgiveness for every repentant believer because Jesus shed His blood on the cross for our sins. 
 

The Power of Confession

James also teaches: "Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another..."

Many people struggle with this and fear opening up, but sometimes healing begins when we become honest.

Sometimes God brings healing when we humble ourselves enough to admit our weaknesses and allow trusted believers to pray with us.

Honesty opens the door for restoration.
 

The Prayer of the Righteous Is Powerful

James says: "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

Effective means it is capable of producing the desired result.

Prayer is not empty words, it has power to accomplish God's purposes.
 

Elijah: An Ordinary Man with Extraordinary Faith

James points to Elijah as an example.

Although Elijah performed great miracles like calling down fire from heaven, raising the dead, praying and stopping the rain for three and a half years, and later praying for rain again and it returned—James reminds us that Elijah was simply a human being like us.

He experienced fear.

He experienced frustration.

He became discouraged.

He even ran away after being threatened.

Yet when Elijah prayed, God answered.

Why?

Because he prayed with faith.
 

What Does It Mean to Pray With Faith?

Praying with faith means approaching God with confidence, assurance, belief, and trust that God is both willing and able to meet our needs.

Faith is confidence that God will do what He has promised.
 

God Is Willing

Luke chapter 5 tells the story of a man full of leprosy who came to Jesus and said:

"Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean."

The man did not doubt Jesus' ability, he only questioned whether Jesus was willing.

Jesus reached out , touched him and said: "I am willing; be clean."

Immediately the leprosy left him.

This reminds us that God is not only able—He is willing.

 

Do Not Doubt

God desires people who confidently believe that He both can and will act on their behalf. 

Doubt prevents us from fully trusting God.

God invites us to trust Him completely.

 

Pray According to God's Will

Another important aspect is praying according to God's will.

Faith-filled prayer is not centered on our problems, it is centered on God's promises.

John writes: "This is the confidence we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us." (1 John 5:14–15)

Real faith begins with God, depends upon His character and stands upon His Word.

 

Stand on God's Word

Isaiah 55 reminds us that God's Word never returns empty. It always accomplishes the purpose for which He sends it.

Therefore, whenever we pray according to Scripture, we pray according to God's will.

If you are unsure of God's will in a situation, seek Him. He will always confirm His direction through His Word.
 
 

God's Promises for Every Situation

When You Need Healing

God promises healing.

Malachi 4:2 declares "But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings..."

 
 
When You Are in Trouble
God promises deliverance.

Psalm 50:15 says: "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you..."

Psalm 46:1 says: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."

Whatever difficulty you are facing today, God invites you to call upon Him
 
 
When You Feel Alone

Many believers experience rejection, loneliness, and discouragement.

God responds with this promise: "..I will never leave you nor forsake you."
(Hebrews 13:5)

God remains with His people even during their darkest moments. 



Come to God with Confidence

Whatever you are facing today; whether sickness, emotional pain, rejection, disappointment, or any long-standing struggle- God invites you to come before Him with faith.

Come believing that He is willing.

Come believing that He is able.

Come standing upon His promises.
 
 

The Invitation to Pray

Hebrews 4:16 gives us this encouragement: "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

God invites every believer to come confidently into His presence.

He is everywhere and where two or three are gathered in His name, He is present.

Therefore, let us pray with faith, believing that God hears, God answers, and God is faithful to His Word.

He hears every sincere prayer.

He knows every need.

He understands every burden.

Today, choose faith over fear.

Choose confidence over doubt.

Choose prayer over worry.

When we pray in faith, we place our confidence not in ourselves, but in a faithful God who hears, answers, and accomplishes His perfect will.

May we become believers who pray with confidence, stand firmly upon God's promises, and trust Him in every circumstance.
