Light: When the Light Comes On, God Starts to Work

Light

Light is a very special word. It appears regularly throughout the Bible.

Perhaps one of the most significant verses containing this word is 1 John 1:5, where the apostle John writes:

"This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all." (NKJV)

God is indeed light as scripture tells us.

When the Light Comes On, God Starts to Work

When God, who is light, decided to create the world and the universe, it is remarkable that He did not begin by saying, “Let there be mountains,” “Let there be lakes,” or “Let there be animals.” Instead, He began by saying, “Let there be light.”

That was the first thing He said.

When the light came on, God started to work. First came the light, and then God began creating the mountains, waters, streams, and animals, and finally, human beings—man and woman.

But first, the light came on.

When the light comes on, God starts to work.

Without God's Light, We Walk in Circles

We know what happened after God created the world perfectly. Humanity turned away from Him. Although we did not physically die at that moment, we walked away from the God who is light and entered into darkness.

There's a scientific study from Germany that examined how human beings behave when surrounded by complete darkness.

The researchers brought approximately 20 people into a large hall. They lined them up against one wall, turned off the lights until the room was completely dark, and instructed them to walk in a straight line towards the opposite wall.

The researchers then monitored their movements.

Interestingly, they discovered that people could not walk in a straight line when surrounded by complete darkness. Instead, they began walking in circles. Every one of the 20 participants started moving in circles, some making large circles and others making smaller ones.

The conclusion was that when people are surrounded by darkness, they struggle to walk in a straight line.

This describes human history in a nutshell.

Without the light of God, we walk in circles. We repeat the same mistakes over and over again. We think we are making progress because we invent new things, such as cars, iPads and so on but morally and ethically, we are not necessarily moving forward.

We continue repeating the mistakes of previous generations.

Two thousand years ago, there were wars, corruption, and poverty. Today, we still experience wars, corruption, and poverty.

Without the light of God, we walk in circles.

However, God will always have the last word. He decided to bring light back into the world.

Jesus Christ: The Light of the World

Before Jesus came, God sent prophets to proclaim that the light would return. Prophets such as Jeremiah and Isaiah spoke about a time when people walking in darkness would see a great light.

The light would come back on, and God would begin working with humanity again.

Two thousand years ago, that light came into the world, and His name is Jesus Christ.

Jesus declared that He is the light of the world and that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.

When Jesus came into the world, the light returned, and God began working in remarkable ways. The sick were healed, the dead were raised, and the power of God was once again demonstrated on earth.

The light had come back on!

There was, however, one challenge. Jesus, the Light of the World, was physically present in only one body. He could shine His light in places such as Capernaum, Nazareth, and Judea, but He could not physically be everywhere at once.

Then He revealed His plan.

In Matthew 5, Jesus looked at the people who followed Him and declared that they were the light of the world.

What did He mean?

When we come to Jesus, who is the Light, He places His light within us. We can then go into our own communities and shine His light wherever He sends us.

And when the light comes on, God starts to work.

Every time you pray, the light comes on, and God starts to work.

Every time you share the love of Jesus, the light comes on, and God starts to work.

Every time you share the gospel, the light comes on, and God starts to work.

It is all about being the light in the darkness. It is about praying, sharing the love of Jesus, and proclaiming His gospel so that God's power can work in people's lives.

God Has Given Each of Us a Unique Light

One of the things the enemy would like us to believe is that we cannot shine because we do not have the right personality.

We may think, “I am not a preacher,” or “I am not a pastor.”

However, the beauty of the Church of Jesus Christ is that it is made up of different people with different gifts and personalities.

The Church is one body with many members. God has entrusted each of us with a unique light that we can shine through our gifts, personalities, and abilities.

Our lights will illuminate the different places where God sends us.

The Church is not about everyone being the same or shining in exactly the same way.

The Church is not about competing; it is about completing one another.

God has prepared different lights to illuminate different parts of the world. Let us consider some examples.

1.The Apricot Soft Light: Those Who Make Others Feel Welcome

Imagine a lamp that produces a warm, soft, apricot-coloured light. It creates a comfortable atmosphere and makes people feel welcome.

Perhaps you are like this lamp.

You may be the kind of person who enters an empty room and, within 15 minutes, has decorated it with cushions and curtains, put on soft music, and made sure everyone has something to drink.

Your desire is to make people feel comfortable, welcomed, and loved.

There is a cold world out there, and we need people who can bring warmth into the lives of others.

If you have this gift, use it to make people feel at home and cared for. Your ability to create a welcoming atmosphere can be a powerful way of sharing God's love.

2.The Oven Lamp: Those Who Serve Faithfully in the Background

An oven lamp is found inside an electric oven. It is rarely noticed, and it does not need to be the center of attention.

It shines quietly, even in the heat. Unlike ordinary lamps, it is designed to withstand the high temperatures inside an oven.

In the same way, the Kingdom of God needs people who serve faithfully behind the scenes.

These are people who may never stand on a stage or receive public recognition, but they serve diligently. They remain faithful in difficult situations and continue working when others give up.

Their service may not attract attention, but it is valuable.

If you are an oven lamp, keep shining. God sees the work you do in the quiet places.

3.The Crystal Lamp: Those Called to Positions of Influence

Perhaps you are like a crystal lamp designed for a beautiful chandelier.

Your calling may be to shine in places of influence, such as politics, law, leadership, or other positions where you can help shape society.

Maybe you have always had an interest in leadership, justice, or making a difference in your nation.

God may use your gifts and abilities to influence decisions, improve systems, and help make your country a better place.

We need people who will carry God's light into positions of influence and use their opportunities responsibly.

If you are a crystal lamp, understand that your influence can be used for a greater purpose.

4.The Environmental Lamp: Those Who Care for God's Creation

Perhaps you are passionate about the environment.

You care about protecting wildlife, preserving forests, reducing pollution, and looking after the planet. You may be especially concerned about protecting your nation's natural treasures.

Genesis 2:15 describes God placing the man in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

For someone with this passion, caring for creation is an important part of their calling.

We need people who will take responsibility for the environment, pray for change, and work towards protecting what God has created.

Perhaps this is the light God has given you to shine.

5.The Slow-Starting Lamp: Those Who Think Carefully Before Acting

Some lamps do not come on immediately. You switch them on, wait a moment, and then they begin to shine.

Perhaps you are like this lamp.

You may be someone who thinks carefully before making decisions. You do not immediately raise your hand to volunteer or commit yourself to something new.

You prefer to reflect, consider the matter, and allow the idea to settle in your heart.

But once you have made up your mind, you step forward and may continue serving faithfully for a long time.

Not everyone responds at the same speed, and that is all right. What matters is that you eventually use your gifts and remain faithful to what God has called you to do.

6.The Party Lamp: Those Who Bring Energy and Celebration

Perhaps you are God's party lamp!

Wherever you go, there is excitement, music, flashing lights, and a lively atmosphere. You enjoy celebrating and bringing energy into a gathering.

People with this personality can bring joy and enthusiasm to the people around them.

Of course, there are times when they need to slow down and know that God also works in quiet moments.

Every personality has strengths and weaknesses. The important thing is to understand how to use your gifts wisely.

The Kingdom of God needs people who bring joy, energy, and celebration, just as it needs those who serve quietly.

7.The Torch: Those Called to Go Wherever God Sends Them

A torch is a cordless lamp. It does not need to remain attached to one particular place.

Perhaps you are like this lamp: a person with a heart for missions and a willingness to go wherever God sends you.

You may love your home country, but you also understand that God can call you to serve in other parts of the world.

Your desire may be to travel, meet different people, experience different cultures, and share the light of the Kingdom wherever you go.

God may have placed this desire within you for a reason.

If you are a missionary lamp, remain willing to follow His leading and take His light to places where it is needed.

8.The Prophetic Lamp: Those Who Speak Truth and Expose Darkness

Perhaps you are a prophetic lamp whose light is particularly bright.

You may have a strong desire to speak God's Word, confront sin, and expose moral corruption. You are passionate about righteousness and eager to see people return to God.

This gift can be valuable because the world needs people who will speak truth and stand for what is right.

However, it is also important to know that the way we communicate matters. Speaking truth should not become an excuse for being unnecessarily harsh or pushing people away.

We must allow God to guide us in knowing when and how to speak.

The Church needs prophetic voices that will expose darkness while remaining faithful to God's purposes.

9.The Darkroom Lamp: Those Who Help Others Discover Their Potential

A darkroom lamp is a special light used in the process of developing photographic film. It helps make it possible to develop images from what initially appears to be blank photographic paper.

Perhaps this describes your gift.

You may have the ability to identify potential in people whom others have overlooked or given up on.

Where others see nothing, you see possibilities. You see beauty, gifts, and abilities that have not yet been discovered.

Through your encouragement, guidance, and faith, you help people discover their potential and develop their gifts.

You may help others discover new dreams, callings, and opportunities to serve God.

We need people who will look beyond what someone appears to be today and help them grow into what God has placed within them.

10.The Unusual Lamp: Those Who Feel Different

Perhaps you are simply different.

You may have an unusual personality, interests that other people do not understand, or a way of looking at life that makes you feel as though you do not fit in.

You may sometimes wonder whether God can use you because you are not like everyone else.

The answer is yes.

No matter who you are, what your personality is like, or how different you may feel, there is a place for you in God's Kingdom.

You do not have to become a copy of someone else to be useful to God.

There is a light you are meant to shine, and God can use your uniqueness for His glory.

The Church Shines Brightest When We Work Together

When all these different lamps come together and shine their unique lights, we see a picture of the Church of the living God.

Every person has a gift to give, a part to play, and a light to shine.

What happens when all these lights begin to shine? What happens when God's people pray, share the love of Jesus, and proclaim His gospel?

A nation can be transformed.

Transformation does not happen only when one person shines or when a few prominent leaders use their gifts. It happens when every member of the body of Christ takes responsibility for shining God's light.

God has given different people different gifts for a reason. We need all of them.

The Church becomes stronger when we understand that our differences are not necessarily obstacles. They can be opportunities for us to complement one another and work towards a common purpose.

When the light comes on, God starts to work.

Shining Together Despite Our Differences

Imagine a group of Christians who decide that they want to reach their community in a new way.

They gather to discuss how they can shine the light of Christ more effectively. However, because they have different personalities and gifts, they do not all approach the idea in the same way.

One person wants to create a warm, welcoming gathering where people can relax and feel comfortable.

Another suggests organizing a lively party with music and excitement to attract people.

Someone else insists that Christians must speak boldly against sin and moral corruption.

Another person encourages everyone to pursue their dreams and believes that the initiative should help people discover their potential.

Others emphasize environmental responsibility, while another person reminds the group that they must take the gospel beyond the church and go where people are.

Everyone has a different perspective. Each person sees the idea through the lens of their own personality, interests, and gifts.

At first, their differences make it difficult to agree on what to do.

Eventually, however, they recognize something important: despite their different perspectives, they share the same faith in God.

They decide to pray together and ask God to help them work as one.

Their plan begins to take shape. They want their initiative to be welcoming, joyful, grounded in God's truth, accessible to everyone, and supportive of people's growth. Above all, they want it to reflect the love of Jesus.

We do not have to be identical to work together for God's purposes.

God's people have never all had the same personalities, opinions, or perspectives. What unites us is more important than what makes us different.

We believe in Jesus. We believe in God's love. We believe in His power to save those who come to Him.

God calls us the light of the world, not because we are perfect, but because His Spirit lives in us.

Wherever we go, we can carry His light with us.

What Happens When We Shine God's Light?

When the light shines, things begin to happen; darkness and injustice are challenged, hope comes into people's lives, people can begin to see the road that leads them home to God.

Therefore, let your light shine.

Allow God to ignite the gifts He has placed within you, and let your light shine alongside the lights of other believers.

Together, we can shine the love of Christ in our communities, cities, nations, and throughout the world.

Shine for those who walk in darkness, those who need to know that their lives have a purpose, those who need to experience the love and forgiveness of God.

Every person in the Church can shine for Jesus Christ. You can shine through your gifts, your personality, and the opportunities God gives you.

God has prepared you for a purpose, just as a light bulb is designed to shine.

However, there is one important thing a light bulb needs: a connection to electricity.

A light bulb may be perfectly designed, but without a power source, it cannot fulfil its purpose of producing light.

In the same way, we need to remain connected to the source of our spiritual light: God Himself.

Stay Connected to the Source of Light

Imagine having been created for a particular purpose but never connecting to the power source that enables you to fulfil it.

You may possess natural abilities and do many good things, but God wants your gifts to be connected to Him so that they can be used for His purposes.

When you are connected to God, your gifts can be used in ways that go beyond your natural abilities. Your life can become a channel through which His love and power reach others.

This is why having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is so important.

The point is not simply that you should try harder to be a good person or do more good works. It is that you should come to the One who is light and allow Him to transform your heart.

When hundreds or thousands of people connect individually to God and begin shining His light, society can begin to change. Darkness, immorality, and corruption can be challenged as God's people live out their faith.

The light begins in individual hearts, but its influence can extend into the world around us.

Responding to Jesus, the Light of the World

Jesus is the One who can ignite our hearts and fill our lives with His light.

He created us with gifts, dreams, and passions—not merely so that we could build our own kingdoms, but so that we could make the world brighter for His glory.

If you are not sure that you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you can come to Him today.

The invitation is to turn away from darkness, receive His forgiveness, and begin walking with Him.

You can pray the following prayer sincerely, making it your own expression of faith:

A Prayer to Receive the Light of Jesus

Dear Lord Jesus,

I come to You because You are the Light of the World, and I need Your light in my heart. Jesus, remove my darkness and forgive my sins. I do not want to walk in circles anymore. I want to walk with You, shine for You, and make a difference in this world. Today, I confess you Jesus as my Lord and my Savior, and I thank You for shining a new light in my heart. From this day forward, I am Your child. I will walk with You forever, until we meet in heaven.

In the name of Christ Jesus, amen.

Take the Light of Jesus into Your World

As you go about your way, do not merely have an impression of the different lamps and personalities described in this post.

Remember that you can go into your own world and illuminate it for Jesus Christ.

You can shine with your unique light and make a difference in the lives of the people around you.

Challenge; be encouraged to think of one person—a friend, neighbor, or relative who needs to experience the light of Jesus Christ.  Pray for that person and make a deliberate decision to reach out during the coming week or in a few days.

It could be a phone call, a text message, or another meaningful opportunity to show the love of Jesus and share the gospel.

Sometimes, shining your light begins with a simple act of kindness or a conversation that helps someone feel seen, loved, and encouraged.

Do not assume that you have nothing to offer. God can use your willingness to reach out to touch another person's life.

As you pray for that person, ask God to help them experience His love, forgiveness, and healing. Then take a practical step towards showing them that love.

When you shine your light, you create opportunities for God's work to take place in the lives of others.

Let Your Light Shine

God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

From the beginning of creation, light has been a powerful picture of God's presence and work. When humanity turned away from Him, it entered spiritual darkness. But God sent Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, to bring hope, salvation, and new life.

Jesus now calls His followers to shine His light in the world.

Each of us has a different personality, different gifts, and different opportunities. Some are called to lead, others to serve quietly. Some bring warmth and encouragement, while others speak boldly, develop people's potential, care for creation, or take the gospel to distant places.

No single lamp can fulfil every purpose. We need one another.

The Church is strongest when every member identifies their God-given gifts, remains connected to the source of light, and works alongside others to fulfil God's purposes.

So do not compare your light with someone else's. Do not allow your differences to make you believe that you have no place in God's Kingdom.

God has created you with a purpose. Discover your gifts, use them faithfully, and allow His love to shine through you.

Reach out to someone who needs encouragement. Pray for your community. Share the gospel. Serve faithfully where God has placed you.

Let your light shine in your home, workplace, church, community, and nation.

When the light comes on, God starts to work.

Let us shine for Jesus Christ and trust Him to use our individual lights, working together, to make the world brighter for His glory.
